Reed D. Meyer: Computer Experience
Computer Experience
Programming
Specific Expertise
- Device drivers and user interfaces, for both Linux and Windows
- Statistical analysis, including model fitting
- Nonlinear, multivariable function optimization
- Physical simulations, including Monte Carlo methods
- Astronomical applications
Software Development Highlights
- The device drivers and user interfaces for the scientific instruments RITMOS and RYTSI
- Linux device drivers for a PixelVision 4096×4096 CCD camera, a weather station, focus encoders, and temperature probes; a driver update
for an Apogee CCD camera; and a Linux kernel patch
for certain Toshiba DVD-RAM drives, all in tandem with the upgrade of Yale University’s Double Astrograph
- An application that fits a spectral library to total
and differential photometry to deduce the surface temperatures and
absolute magnitudes of the individual components of binary stars
- Numerical simulation of speckle interferometry taken with a multi-anode
microchannel array (MAMA) detector
- A package for fitting model spectra, including the results of neutron
star atmospheric simulations by G.G. Pavlov et al., to ROSAT X-ray observations
of pulsars
- CGI programs for the enhancement of the gigacorp.net web pages
- Programs that, having been written in the author’s leisure time,
are in the public domain and therefore available for download, include:
airmass.c, a precise airmass calculator for
astronomy; CBM2ASC, a Commodore ASCII to standard ASCII conversion utility
Languages
- Expert in Java, C/C++ (GNU, Visual C++, and Borland environments),
FORTRAN, IDL, BASIC, and HTML
- Routine programmer in C/C++, then Java, since 1990, and writer of substantial
scientific programs in FORTRAN
- Experienced with Unix shell scripts and Rexx; familiar with assembly
language and Lisp
Miscellaneous Achievements
- Solved Paul Harkins’ “12 Steel Balls Logic Test”, a test for programming aptitude,
in less than three hours
- Have programmed regularly since 1981, having started with BASIC on
Sinclair and then Commodore machines
- Submitted programs for competition on two occasions;
each time, the submission won an award
System Administration
- Personally assembled and maintained more than 15 machines, running
various flavors of Linux and/or Windows
- Experienced with Linux network administration and with SunOS administration
- Built and have maintained the
server hosting gigacorp.net
- Installed a home network years before the concept became popular
Game Level Design
Software Package Familiarity
- Frequently used software packages include:
Visual Studio, GNU GCC, IDL, IRAF, TEX/LATEX,
Microsoft Office, CorelDRAW, GIMP, and Apache Server
